Class Etiquette

Before Class

  • Food & drink: Yoga is best practised on an empty stomach. Avoid heavy foods and drinks 2 hours before class. This keeps your body light and avoids discomfort during certain poses.

  • Clothing: Wear comfy clothes that you can move in easily. You don’t need shoes, but can wear socks if your feet feel cold.

  • Shower: To practice feeling fresh and be mindful of being around other people, you are encouraged to shower before coming to class.

  • Perfume: Please refrain from wearing strong perfumes to class, it may cause discomfort to others.

  • Towel: If you tend to sweat easily, you can bring a towel from home. This also helps avoid slipping on the mat.

  • Feeling unwell: Practice mindfulness if you are not feeling very well. If you have a contagious condition, please refrain from attending classes until clears up.

  • Pregnancy: If you doubt or know that you are pregnant, please consult your doctor before coming to class and let me know if you’re pregnant so I can cater the class accordingly.

  • Menstruation: Follow your intuition; you may choose to practice mindfully or skip class altogether and chill at home. If you do attend, it is generally recommended that you avoid inversions and strong core work.

During Class

  • Questions: if you have any questions during, feel free to address them to your teacher during or after the practice.

  • Using props: Know that props are there to support you, help avoid injury and can also take you deeper into the practice.

  • Cleanliness & tidiness: keep the space you occupy clean and neat. This helps calm the mind as well as avoid tripping on objects. After class, store the props back in their designated area.

  • Respect your neighbour’s space: Please do not step on other students’ mats (including your teacher); they might not be comfortable with that.

  • Eating & drinking: Please don’t eat or chew gum during class, it isn’t safe. If you get thirsty, you can drink small sips of water. If your blood sugar tends to and does get low, you can have some juice or a small piece of sweet food.

  • Silence: To maintain an inward space, minimise chatting with others during class.

  • Late arrival: To avoid interruption, please be present at the beginning of the class. If you arrive late to class and an opening meditation is running, you can enter quietly and sit down, then set up after movement begins.

  • Mobile phones: All mobile phones need to be silent and vibration off. Please store your mobile phone away from the practice area.

  • Leaving early: If you have leave early, please inform your teacher at the beginning of the class and take an early Savasana (final resting pose) before you leave.

  • Enjoy: Practice mindfully, enjoy the class and avoid comparing your practice to others (yoga is neither a sport nor a competition).
